Estas estructuras, llamadas estructuras metalorg\u00e1nicas , podr\u00edan utilizarse, por ejemplo, para extraer agua del aire del desierto, capturar di\u00f3xido de carbono, almacenar gases t\u00f3xicos o impulsar reacciones qu\u00edmicas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Susumu Kitagawa , Richard Robson y Omar Yaghi reciben el Premio Nobel 2025 por desarrollar una nueva forma de arquitectura molecular. En sus dise\u00f1os, los iones met\u00e1licos act\u00faan como bloques de construcci\u00f3n, unidos entre s\u00ed por largas mol\u00e9culas org\u00e1nicas (carbonadas). Juntos, los iones y mol\u00e9culas met\u00e1licas forman cristales regulares con grandes cavidades. Estos materiales porosos se denominan estructuras metalorg\u00e1nicas (MOF). Al variar los bloques de construcci\u00f3n de las MOF, los qu\u00edmicos pueden adaptarlas para capturar y almacenar diferentes sustancias. Las MOF tambi\u00e9n pueden impulsar reacciones qu\u00edmicas o conducir electricidad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00abLas estructuras metalorg\u00e1nicas tienen un enorme potencial. Nos brindan oportunidades inimaginables para dise\u00f1ar nuevos materiales con nuevas funciones\u00bb, afirma Heiner Linke, presidente del Comit\u00e9 Nobel de Qu\u00edmica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Todo comenz\u00f3 en 1989, cuando Richard Robson intent\u00f3 explotar las propiedades inherentes de los \u00e1tomos de una forma innovadora. Empez\u00f3 con iones de cobre y una mol\u00e9cula de cuatro brazos, cada uno de los cuales conten\u00eda un grupo qu\u00edmico que era atra\u00eddo por los iones de cobre. Al mezclar las sustancias, estas se atrajeron entre s\u00ed y juntas formaron un cristal bien ordenado y aireado. Era como un diamante lleno de cavidades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Robson vio de inmediato el potencial de su estructura molecular, pero era inestable y se desintegraba con facilidad. Quienes sentaron las bases s\u00f3lidas para esta estructura molecular fueron Susumu Kitagawa y Omar Yaghi. Entre 1992 y 2003, realizaron una serie de descubrimientos revolucionarios. Kitagawa demostr\u00f3 que los gases pueden fluir dentro y fuera de las estructuras y predijo que podr\u00edan volverse flexibles. Yaghi cre\u00f3 un material MOF muy estable y demostr\u00f3 que es posible modificar racionalmente los MOF para que adquieran propiedades nuevas y deseadas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Desde los revolucionarios descubrimientos de los galardonados, los qu\u00edmicos han construido decenas de miles de MOF diferentes.
